About the Author:

Celia Thaxter, was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on June 29, 1835 and grew up on the Isles of Shoals. When she was sixteen, she married Levi Thaxter and moved to the mainland. After 10 years away, she moved back to Appledore Island and became the hostess of her father’s hotel, the Appledore House. She welcomed many famous visitors, including the artist Childe Hassam. Her poems first appeared in The Atlantic Monthly and by the late 19th century, she had become one of America’s favorite authors. Among the Isles of Shoals was published in 1873.
