Eliza s Dream is paramount black literature. In 1893 Eliza Parker, the beautiful daughter of a bi-racial former slave and a Native American woman was happy attending school and sharing childish confidences with her best friend, Savannah. One day as Eliza and Savannah completed their chores and giggled, an older man, Jenkins Lee, came to call on her parents and Eliza found herself betrothed to a stranger with her dream of finishing school being thrown away with the bathwater. While in rural southwestern Georgia, Eliza deals with a philandering, physically abusive, and usually absent husband that rambles in and out of her and her eight children lives. Because of her tenacious Christian values, Eliza struggles with her situation and emotions; especially after a handsome, attentive, former school friend (Sol) begins to show his interest. Eliza s abusive husband Jenkins returns home and assumes his beloved Eliza has engaged in a forbidden affair with gentleman Sol, leaving dear individuals brutally attacked. Death, bitterness, sorrow, and a strange twist of fate makes Eliza question her faith in God, the meaning of life, and all that it holds for her. Inspirational, Historical, Romantic, and Christian...Eliza s Dream belongs in the same category as gifted authors Zora Neale Hurston, Bernice McFadden, and J. California Cooper. Let s give praise for keeping African American, fictional and factual accounts of black heritage alive.
