Writer Maria Kreiser recounts the story of a Soviet German, her mother, Magdalena, born in the German village of Munchen near Odessa on the Black Sea. Magdalena was born in 1928 in Stalin's reign. With Germany's invasion in 1941 and retreat in 1944, her family goes with them back to the Reich and is resettled in Poland. They are deported to forest work camps in the Urals where Magdalena survives for 30 years until she is finally able to make a triumphant return to Germany.
