"The Little Elephant with the Big Earache" is the first in a series of five stories about common infectious illnesses. Two more stories are due out in the fall of 2005, "Peeper Has a Fever," about a frog who almost misses a diving contest because of a high fever; and "Katie Caught a Cold," about a polar bear with a cold who tries to skate without sneezing!

Like "The Little Elephant with the Big Earache," each new story will have a parent guide included which answers common questions from parents. The guide will offer advice about how to take care of a sick child and when to call or see the doctor.

As a pediatrician, I have taken care of sick children for many years, and I have listened both to them and to their worried parents. I think I have answered a million questions! It is clear to me that children and their parents are curious about the illnesses and issues they face together.

I hope that "The Little Elephant with the Big Earache" helps to reassure children and their parents as it educates them about ways to take care of earaches at home, about when to call or see the doctor, and about whether antibiotics might or might not be appropriate for their child's ear infection. The decision to use antibiotics depends on several factors, most importantly the judgement of the pediatrician at the time of their child's examination.
