This is the story of one pioneer woman's struggle through war and tragedy on the Minnesota prairie. Lavina Eastlick, her husband, John, and their family were among the many pioneers who trekked westward toward Minnesota's rich land in the late 1850s and early 1860s. In 1861, the Eastlicks setted near Lake Shetek along the well-known Lake Shetek Trail. On August 20, 1862, two days into the U.S.-Dakota War, Dakota warriors attacked pioneer cabins on the east side of Lake Shetek. The settlers, including the Eastlicks, fled about four miles east before the Dakota caught up with them. The horror that followed at what now is known as Slaughter Slough culminated in the deaths of 13 settlers and the capture of 11 more. Lavina eluded the Dakota, and although she lost her husband and three sons in the attack, she was reunited with her two living sons, rescued, and taken to safety in New Ulm in Brown County. Hers is a courageous survival story. Photographs, plates, charts, and graphs enrich the text. Dr. John Isch is Professor Emeritus at Martin Luther College, New Ulm, MN.
