I wrote the first edition of this book in 2006-2007, because I wanted to help people not make foolish mistakes when dealing with a common crisis, that of suddenly being faced with the huge financial costs of moving a family member into a nursing home.
As an elder law and estate planning attorney I had been advising clients for over 20 years at that point, but I realized that too often people came to me too late to take advantage of all the great planning techniques I had figured out over the years. I wanted to make sure that people who bought my book would have the same information I was providing to my private clients, but for less than the $250 an hour I was charging them.
Each year I have expanded the techniques available to readers as well as kept the information and government figures up-to-date. The Sixth Edition (2012) of "How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets" is now out, and I encourage everyone with a parent or other family member facing a long-term nursing home stay to learn the "secret" tools and techniques provided to clients of high-priced attorneys, for a fraction of the cost.
