Allison Anderson is a normal but not average fourteen year old girl. She knows she's different, but it hadn't bothered her too much until now. New house, new neighborhood, and new school are bad enough, but it's her first year of high school. She becomes more aware of her social and physical limitations than ever before. And the new people she meets are perplexing: the tough-looking girl from her home room, the dangerous-looking but charming boy she can't help liking, the quiet older girl who keeps to herself, and the sullen junior that doesn't seem to trust or like her at all. She's been the victim of bullying in the past and doesn't know whether to trust them. She also begins to learn that things - and people - are not always what they seem. Her world is turned upside-down by these and other new friends, human and otherwise. Her world soon becomes complicated and much more interesting!

Allison is a teen affected by autism; she experiences things and thinks differently from most other kids. The series has emphasis on relationships, assumptions, and equine activities. Themes also include bullying and prejudice, and coming of age choices.

From the Back Cover:
New house, new town, new school; it was the beginning of Allison's freshman year and it seemed like everything had changed. Everything except her that is; she still felt as physically and socially deficient as ever. But two things would happen just before the first day of school foreshadowing great changes in her life--great changes in her. Allison's quiet, solitary world was about to be turned upside down, her assumptions challenged on an almost daily basis, and she would begin to learn that things, very often, are not at all what they seem.
From the Inside Flap:
"Sorry about what?" Dave asked gently, his voice very soft. "Don't be an idiot. You're allowed to cry, you know. Hell . . . you love him. It hurts more than anything when people you love leave you . . . for whatever reason."
These comforting words only served to aggravate my raw emotions and I sobbed harder than ever. Was it that easy to replace someone? I didn't believe that. If I ever lost him . . . .
