"In the Footsteps of Valor" is a culmination of 17 years of travel by author Henry Bodden to Europe and the Pacific, photographing "then & now" sites of World War II. What began as a hobby, soon escalated into a passion of meeting and documenting the exploits of veterans and the places they fought and suffered. He took to heart the advice of historian Stephen Ambrose - "if you write about history, you must first walk the ground." His adventures have taken him to Normandy, Paris, and Alsace in France. In Germany "The Eagle's Nest", Nuremberg, the Rhine River, Berlin, and Flossenberg death camp. The Battle of the Bulge took him to Bastogne & Malmedy in Belgium, and Patton's grave in Luxembourg. In the Pacific to Pearl Harbor, Guam, Iwo Jima, and the Philippines. The book is unique in content, as it is written in a photographic diary fashion laced with trivia, history, movie locales, art, and is a military travelogue. In the JFK PT109 segment, the author recounts his eyewitness account of the JFK assassination, which is recorded in the archives of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. The exploits of Lt. Audie Murphy are well documented with many images of his career. The book is written in chronological order as events unfolded between Europe and the Pacific. The historical narrative is written around the 700 images throughout the book. Among the veterans he has been with have been survivors of Pearl Harbor, The Bataan Death March and Corregidor, Iwo Jima, the surrender on the Missouri, Omaha Beach, Battle of the Bulge, and much more. This book is a tribute to "the greatest generation" as they are now leaving us, and to keep their memory alive. What we now take for granted was paid for in blood and untold sacrifice by those teenagers that rushed to serve their country after Pearl Harbor.
