The mathematical questions involved in the study of music, such as temperament, etc., also engaged his attention, and formed the subject of several of his works. The golden age of music in Vienna belongs to a later period than that contained within the scope of this volume. The intercourse between that city and Italy had been for a long time intimate. Apostolo Zeno and Metastasio had been successively welcomed as poets-laureate by the Austrian court, and for most of its musicians it depended on the same country. Fig. 114.--Johann Adam Hillcr. Many names of some celebrity will be found in the list of court musicians, among whom may be mentioned Antonio Draghi, J. B. Buononcini, P. F. Tosi (whose Treatise on the Florid Song, originally published in Italian, gives so much information on the science of singing as then practised, and also many interesting particulars of the great singers of those days), Antonia Caldara, and others. But there was one musician filling the post of Capellmeister at Vienna who deserves a. more extended notice, for his celebrity was European. This was Johann Josef Fux, who was court composer from 1698 to 1740, serving under the three emperors Leopold I., Joseph I., and Charles VI. He was born in the year 1660 in Styria, and but little is known of his education beyond the fact that he appears to have travelled in France, Germany, and Italy to increase his knowledge and experience. In 1675 he was already settled in Vienna. All three of the sovereigns whom he served were well versed in music, and testified for him the greatest esteem. He attempted with success all kinds of musical composition: instrumental, sacred and operatic. ...
