This suggestion was approved and adopted, and "three zealous, intelligent and influential members of the church"--Alexander Anderson, a North Carolinian,(born in Orange county, in 1764,) Finis Ewing and Samuel King-Mvere chosen. These three gentlemen subsequently prepared written discourses and had them presented to the Transylvania presbytery, held in October, 1801, which body directed these candidates for the ministry to read their discourses to Rev. Mr. Rice, privately, who reported favorably. The presbytery licensed them "to catechise and exhort" in the vacant congregations and directed them to prepare other discourses to be read at the next spring session of the presbytery, at which Mr. Anderson was received as a candidate by a majority of one vote, while Mr. King and Mr. Ewing were not received, owing to a majority vote of one agains.t each, but they continued as catechists and exhorters. At the. succeeding presbytery in October, 1802, Mr. King and Mr. Ewing-weTe" fully licensed, notwithstanding the opposition of Rev. T. B. Craighead, Rev. James Balch and Rev. Samuel Donnel, and Elders Daniel McGoodwin and John Hannah. Throughout Kentucky and Tennessee these "glorious revivals" continued until 1804, during which many regular Presbyterian clergymen participated in Northern Kentucky which resulted in the formation of bodies called "Marshallites," "Stoneites," "New Lights," and " Christians." The ministers who headed these parties were Revs. Marshall, Stone, Dunlavy, McNamer, Huston, Bowman, and Thompson. Marshall and Thompson afterwards acknowledged their errors and returned to the Presbyterian church; while Stone, Dunlavy, McNamer and Huston' became Shakers. It was i...
