Sako Ma is an explorative look at the monkey as a sacred animal totem, ancestor, cult figure and religious icon in indigenous cultures in the East and West. Never before has a document looked at simian folklore and mythology cross-culturally.

From the Publisher:
Matam Press began in Tucson, Arizona on March 1, 1999 as a publishing house whose central concern is alternative views and discourse. This is the first publishing house to include a focus on the Divine Mother and Her global legacy, particularly among people of African descent. This is not the whole story on this press but one interesting aspect. It all started when I could not find a certain book with a certain perspective on a certain subject, thus began this enigmatic small press. Matam Press attempts to fill in a gap that is conspicuous among books published, creating books with unique subjects and perspectives that are rare but illuminating. You won't find the monotonous selection of titles here at Matam Press and that is one remarkable thing.
From the Author:
Sako Ma: A Look at the Sacred Monkey Totem is a wonderful book that really goes deep into the mysteries surrounding primates and their relationship to ancient and modern humanity. Most books are focused on animal totemism, generally. But rarely does a book really dig deep into the mythology of a particular species as this one does. And it shows just how extensive and complex mythology is among native fellows. Ancient belief systems see all creation as sacred and emanating energy and intelligence. Unlike today where certain groups or certain castes are divine, many ancient people see the whole world as one great -divine body, all intimately interconnected. This did not just include humans but minerals, plants, and animals as well. The values and beliefs that form around many animal types is not fanciful but quite elaborate and comprehensive. And it is extraordinary indeed to see mythology emerge as a scientific truth when modern researchers discover what many have known all along. Sako Ma illustrates how important different animal forms are to indigenous world-view. It has proven to be more then just an old story that needs to be told. For me, it has proven to be yet another powerful, lost archetype in the collective imagination.
