Millions of healthy, adoptable animals are surrendered to shelters and animal control facilities across the country every year. The reasons are many...strays, abandoned pets and victims of abuse and neglect, but also well-loved companions whose owners can’t care for them any longer. Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) is one of the major shelter facilities in the Houston, Texas area, and has one of the highest adoption rates in the city. Many thousands of homeless pets pass through their doors each year, over 400,000 since their founding in 1972.
Through a unique relationship between CAP and Rover Oaks Pet Resort in Katy, Texas, Rover Oaks is able to offer training and foster care services to a number of
CAP dogs who might otherwise be faced with euthanasia due to health or behavior issues. Rover Oaks employees and employee friends and family members have also frequently adopted these fur-kids!
Rover’s Rescues...True Stories of Shelter Dogs and Second Chances tells the tales of twenty-five canine visitors to our facilities. Each one has his or her own sad story as to how he or she came to be a guest at CAP and/or Rover Oaks...each one has his or her own quirks and personality traits...each one had his or her own challenges to becoming “adoptable”...and each one has his or her own happy ending!
Intertwined in the telling of these stories, you may find useful information about various common (and some not-so-common!) canine health and behavior problems and you may recognize some characteristics in your own furry children. About the Author:
After a career of over twenty years in marketing, corporate strategy, consulting and executive leadership in the medical and chemical products industries, Joy Lee left corporate life in 2001 to pursue her passion for animals. She spent several years as a full-time volunteer at the Humane Society of Missouri in St. Louis, where she worked primarily with large dogs on socialization and basic obedience to improve their chances for successful adoption. During her time with the Humane Society, she attended several behavior and obedience training courses and also volunteered in the veterinary clinic assisting with surgical and post-operative care of dogs and cats. Of course, she couldn t resist adding several shelter dogs to her family during this time.
After moving to Houston, Texas in 2003 to escape the Missouri winters, Joy worked for several years as an independent consultant in the biomedical industry. She joined the staff at Rover Oaks Pet Resort in 2005 just for fun , and worked initially at the Houston location in customer service, doggie daycare, pet care management and as Director of Operations. Joy and Steve Smith (owner of Rover Oaks Pet Resort in Houston) became partners in Rover Oaks Pet Resort in Katy in late 2005 and worked throughout 2006 to oversee the construction and start-up of the new facility, which opened its doors that September. She concedes that she now works harder than she ever has in her life!
Joy has greatly appreciated the close working relationship that has developed between Rover Oaks Katy and Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), and enjoys helping the rescue dogs in their search for a loving forever home. She is thankful to each and every family that offers these dogs a second chance and a place in their hearts and their lives.
Joy currently resides in Houston with husband Tommy, human son Geoffrey and her five rescued canine children: Sylvie, Rusty, Tyson, Turbo and Merlin. She dreams of retiring on a beach some day!
