My book explores issues revolving around criminal justice in America as well. Including how the Media contributes to the creation of crime (and criminals)by publishing names and ridiculing people in the newspaper, thus ruining reputations.

I wrote this book when my life started closing in on me.  Previously I had (and tried to keep on having) a lot of good feelings about how everything in my life would all work out okay, but I soon realized these feelings weren't going anywhere.  At that point, I wanted to somehow chart a map for all this despair I had kept experiencing within myself for so long (mixed in at the beginning anyway with many, many good feelings of course) and, in this way, try to gain relief from what I eventually began to think of as a "substance" abuse problem.  But not in the conventional sense. 

It was not my own "substance" abuse that was at the heart of the problem.  Although my poor father drank off and on for years (and I understood perfectly why he did and sympathized completely) I'm not now nor have I ever been an alcoholic.  Instead, like Jill in the book, I finally came to believe that the "substance" being abused was the original promise of America, what this wonderful country originally stood for (but has not lived up to for so many people). 

Then, when the "Occupy" Movement began taking shape, I realized (also like Jill in the book) that I was on to something.  Many, many people not only in the United States but all over the world (and in London as well which I read yesterday on the Internet) were experiencing (and protesting against) a similar "left out" feeling.  It was not just my own "personal" problem, but a global problem as well.

So then (like Jill) I knew I was not alone (which gave me a little comfort).

Phantom is dedicated wholeheartedly to the Occupy Movement. 

As those in the Occupy Movement are doing now (with much more success for the most part although some have been cruelly pepper sprayed and have had to be hospitalized with broken bones, etc.), I tried all my life to engage in a "dialogue" with those in authority.  First in the Educational System, then in the Catholic Church, then in the Mental Health (or Therapy) System.  And finally in the Voting Booth (the so called "Cradle of Democracy") when I tried to express my point of view politically.  In each one of these settings, however, there was no "dialogue" in the true meaning of the word.  It was (in more ways than one) a system of control set up to deny that control and appear "democratic." 

And, although it was better than a Dictatorship (on paper anyway), there were so many aspects to it that were like hidden "Land Mines" (just waiting to go off) that I made a promise to myself that if I ever got into a position to do so, I would do my best to bring this entire invisibly orchestrated prison of control into the naked light of day. I vowed to (some day) create my own "force field" (and verbal vehicle) through which I could give uncontaminated voice to all those issues (and concerns) which had troubled me so greatly over the years.  And for which, when I had previously tried to "dialogue" about them, I had been so cruelly mocked, treated like a criminal and made to suffer.
