Review:
While this book is most suited for school librarians and teachers involved in literacy, it is an interesting read for public librarians who may not be familiar with early literacy struggles and teaching strategies. For public librarians, reading this book will give them surface knowledge of teaching literacy to students. Reading Basics for All Teachers examines readers of all ages, however, the primary focus is on younger readers (elementary school age), although the activity strategies could be aged up for older (middle school and high school age) struggling readers. If a professional is interested in gaining further knowledge of early literacy, this is a great starting place. (VOYA)
Reading Basics for all Teachers is an excellent resource for all instructors as they support readers in any content area. Theories, easy to implement strategies, and activities help to deepen the reader’s understanding of the reading process. Learning to read and comprehend rigorous texts are complex and ever developing processes that are adeptly addressed. This book will help teachers meet the rigors of 21st century literacy. A knowledgeable teacher can make all the difference in student success! (Carol Todd, PhD, Rio Salado College)
Reading Basics for All Teachers: Supporting the Common Core by Melinda Carver and Lauren Pantoja, effectively addresses classroom visits and literary connections to help readers envision the strands’ impact on instruction. Moreover, the book provides leaders and teachers with useful assessments and activities to support the understanding and implementation of each strand to move from the theoretical ideal of each strand to the practical reality of the classroom. (Andrea M. Nelson-Royes, EdD, educational researcher and author of "Success in School and Career: Common Core Standards in Language Arts K-5")
In Reading Basics for All Teachers: Supporting the Common Core, Carver and Pantoja provide the necessary link between what teachers do and research supports as necessary components for literacy success. Readers will find each chapter full of engaging strategies that are evidence-based. This book is much more than a comprehensive set of strategies -- it is a necessary handbook that will help teachers make informed and effective decisions about Common Core implementation with creative and successful results. This book is a gem with techniques that are immediately applicable in the classroom. (Kathy Perez, professor emerita, Saint Mary’s College of California, consultant, and author)
