As an Emeritus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iowa, Karl finally decided to write about it in the form of this story. Karl joined with his friend John Syrbu, an author, illustrator and dentist to complete What happened in the middle of the night? To show their appreciation for friendly elephants around the world, John and Karl have committed to donating 15% of proceeds directly to various elephant foundations, such as the International Elephant Foundation and Save Elephant Foundation. These groups support conservation, education and research of the world's African and Asian elephant populations.
