Recently updated to reflect changes through November 1, 2017, this Maine Real Estate Law and Rules Handbook is designed as a reference and study aid for students taking licensing courses and practicing licensees. The handbook reprints most applicable statutes and rules with the added feature of an extensive table of contents that facilitates locating information. The exact text of all statutes and rules has been included with the intent of creating an educational tool more than a legal reference book. As such, some extraneous references and repealed sections have been eliminated, making the book efficient and “user-friendly.” This Handbook has application to all three licensing courses currently offered in Maine: Sales Agent, Associate Broker, and Designated Broker as well as many continuing education programs. In addition, licensees will find the handbook a handy guide to their daily practice of real estate brokerage in Maine. Included are MRS Title 32, Chapter 114—the Real Estate Brokerage License Act and the rules adopted by the Maine Real Estate Commission. Additionally, MRS Title 5, Chapter 341 and MRS Title 10, Chapter 901 are included as a reference to laws pertaining to all professional licensing in Maine.

About the Author:
Walter Boomsma’s career as an educator/teacher began in the mid-seventies as part of a dealer development program for a national retailer. In 1985 he started his own consulting company specializing in individual and organizational development nationwide. Walter says that it was perhaps fate the found him working with kids shortly after he “semi-retired” from a life on the road to Maine in 2002. His experiences with the kids led to his book “Small People—Big Brains: stories about simplicity, exploration, and wonder” released in 2013. One chapter of his first book is titled, “I’m Quitting Teaching.” He quickly admits he’s not retiring, but “I’ve actually been giving up teaching for a quite a few years now... I’m constantly doing it differently because teaching is really about learning. I believe learning should be as much fun as possible. When it’s not fun, it should at least be rewarding.” Maybe that’s why he gives stickers—not just to the kindergarteners, but to adults as well. Walter has been teaching real estate courses for more than a decade. He is a licensed real estate broker associated with Mallett Real Estate in Dover Foxcroft, Maine. In addition to offering learning opportunities with several adult education programs, “Mr. Boomsma” is also an elementary school substitute teacher, grades kindergarten through six.
