Neil Wilson, author of the definitive British ghost story bibliography, Shadows in the Attic (British Library, 2000) provides authoritative and extensive introductory notes, including a history of the supernatural from ancient to modern times; an analysis of the evolution of the ghost story; and an exploration of common themes and topics in supernatural fiction. Note: Ghost Writings offers an invaluable introduction to the genre compiled with the aim of inspiring the reader to explore further. It concentrates particularly on the rich heritage of British ghost fiction, and for this reason American authors in the genre are not included. It should also be noted that the selected bibliographies included with author details are not comprehensive and often include publications that are now out of print; they are mentioned solely for historical interest.
