About the Author:
Ava Muhammad is a native of Columbus, Ohio. Her parents, William and Gladys Atkinson, were both educators who possessed a powerful consciousness of the Black experience. Insuring that Ava and her sisters, Carol and Lori, were well aware of the events surrounding the civil rights struggle and instilling a love of history and literature in their daughters. Ava received her Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law School and is a member of the New York Bar. In the early 1980’s, she joined several other young Black attorneys in starting a successful criminal defense practice. It was during this time, that she and her mother were diagnosed with breast cancer. They both underwent chemotherapy for nearly two years. Having lost her father to lung cancer while still in law school, Dr. Muhammad found herself on a search for spiritual answers to these overwhelming circumstances. She attended a lecture by Minister Louis Farrakhan. After hearing him, she accepted Islam as her faith and relocated to Chicago, Illinois as a legal adviser to the Nation of Islam. Ava proving to be a gifted lecturer and researcher, was appointed to the ministry by Minister Farrakhan. Her ability to connect with the human spirit has placed her in great demand among colleges, universities, churches, conferences and radio programs. Among them are Howard University, Yale University Law School, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Florida A&M, Emory University, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, Ohio State University and Vermont Law School. She has addressed the National Association of Black Social Workers, the NAACP Leadership Conference, the Million Woman March, the 40th Anniversary of the March on Washington in 2003. She has been a frequent participant in the Empowerment Seminars at the Essence Music Festival, and many other conferences to numerous to mention. Ava Muhammad is the first Muslim woman in modern history to occupy a position of authority over a mosque anywhere in the world. She served as the Nation of Islam’s Southern Regional Minister from 1998 until 2000. With her husband, she has traveled the globe, captivating and inspiring audiences in London, Paris, the Caribbean and virtually every major city in America. Ava Muhammad has been married for 21 years to Darius Muhammad, a teacher, coach and former All-American guard for Loyola University. They are the loving parents of two daughters, Sasha and Cherelle.
