The visual wit and optical illusions of the master graphic artist and designer, Shigeo Fukuda, transcend cultures.
Shigeo Fukuda Masterworks is a compendium of the most famous work selected and arranged by the renowned graphic artist and designer himself. Sketches show the development of his concepts for each piece.
Born in Tokyo in 1932, Shigeo Fukuda graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1956. His unique style and provocative images earned him a reputation as one of the finest and most exciting poster artists in the world today.
Fukuda's solo exhibitions include the New York IBM Art Gallery (1967), the San Francisco Asian Art Gallery (1987), the Camper Modern Art Museum, France (1991) and the Japan Foundation in Toronto (1999).

Masterworks
Within a span of 50 years, I have created more than 1300 large posters. These were mainly targeted towards Japanese corporations, exhibitions and the entertainment and merchandising industries. Most were designed with the Japanese lifestyle and culture in mind.
For this book I have selected posters I feel best represent my work and yet can be enjoyed by people all over the world who have different lifestyles, cultures and customs.
Ignoring the chronological sequence in which they were created, I have arranged the posters on the pages in the way I felt would be most interesting to the reader.
In addition, I have presented a sequence of images following page 16 that show some of the preliminary design stages to help the reader appreciate the creative process that lies behind my work.
Finally, there are a few images of pieces I created for display outdoors. These represent another dimension of my work and allow you to see how I deal with three-dimensional space.
