2.400 miniature masterpieces.

A matchbox label collector is called a phillumenist. But you don't have to be one to love these tiny works of art. The popularity of collecting matchboxes is growing because they are affordable and a joy to look at.

Matchbox Labels features 2.400 of the best specimens, chosen for their charm and beauty. The matchbook labels are organized geographically, sorted within each group by theme, and captioned with insightful text.

The book covers selections from:

  • Scandinavia
  • Europe
  • Eastern Europe
  • Russia
  • South East Asia, China and Japan
  • India and Pakistan
  • Great Britain and North America.

The labels range from minute works of socialist realism from the former USSR to marvelous naïve animal and bird pictures from southern India and sophisticated graphics and illustrations from Japan.

A brief introduction offers a concise history of matchbook art and provides helpful advice on how to start, gather and organize a collection of your own.

Matchbox Labels is an eye-catching and fascinating reference for art lovers, designers and collectors.

Introduction

The extensive and varied collection reproduced in this book was acquired from all over the world across a number of years. The labels were found in all sorts of places -- at book fairs and tag sales, on antique stalls, and even in a family collection of ephemera, but the majority was collected from a source only available to the modern collector, and invaluable to them, whatever their area of interest -- eBay.

Matchbox labels are very tempting to the collector for a number of reasons: their comparatively low cost means they are accessible to anyone; their small size makes them easy to transport; and their endless variety keeps the keen collector engaged and acquisitive.

These miniature masterpieces of everyday, even throwaway, design will appeal to anyone with an interest in graphics or popular culture. Matchbox Labels is neither an encyclopaedia for philumenists (the proper term for collectors of matchbox labels), nor a detailed history, but simply a celebration of color and design; a huge display of popular art from countries ranging from Sweden to India.

Leafing through the collection, distinct graphic styles will soon become apparent. The geometric, Art Deco sophistication of some of the Finnish designs contrasts sharply with the charming folkloric quality of many of the Indian images, for instance, while the diagonal compositions of Soviet labels recall the constructivist styles of the earlier 20th century, seen against the western European designs, laid out with banner motifs and curlicues, and more in tune with the 19th-century typography or signwriting. The limits of the tiny rectangular box have challenged designers to create works that, in many ways, resemble miniature posters, selling the product with vivid visual appeal.

Matchbox labels can tell us as much about everyday life as mote traditionally recognized artforms. Animals, flowers and religious motifs abound in Indian design, beautiful costumes, food and exquisitely rendered abstract patterns appear in Japan, while more prosaic but no less compelling public education messages remain popular in Eastern Europe. National heroes, mythical beasts and esoteric symbols sit comfortably alongside more pedestrian advertisements for been coffee and, of course, matches. civic pride and architectural gems, transport and household goods all feature, too.

These hundreds of tiny, colorful snippets offer the enthusiast a visual feast, accompanied by informed and entertaining captions, if you want to make a collection of your own, here's the inspiration; if you simply want to look and admire, let them speak for themselves.
