An insider's guide to the fascinating and fast-moving world of the fashion trade.

Fashion: Concept to Catwalk reveals the inner workings of the world of fashion. Comprehensive descriptions of fashion history, theory and business practices are interspersed with an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to the Paris studio and atelier of designer Lutz Huelle as he creates a spring-summer collection.

Fully illustrated with more than 200 photographs and drawings, the book focuses on the six components of the design process, from inspiration to the runway:

  • Products -- the influences of vintage designs, popular culture, silhouette and themes
  • Colors and fabrics -- the palette, fibers, weaves, motifs, patterns and needlework
  • Concept -- developing the idea, sketching, using a dress form and illustrating
  • Visual presentation -- the studio, portfolio, brands, labels, layout and house style
  • Design and production -- the atelier, draping, fittings, pattern-making and assembling
  • Promotion -- events, public relations, styling, models, photo sessions and the runway

With its documentary-style format, real sketches, technical information and useful resources, Fashion: Concept to Catwalk offers a rare look at the high-fashion trade through the lens of a working studio.

About the Author:

Olivier Gerval is the founder and director of C-6-12, a school of art and design, where he created an original method of apprenticeship.

Review:
Gerval, founder and director of the Olivier Gerval Fashion and Design Institute in Paris...documents the institute's pedagogy for creating a line of garments from inspiration and conceptual design, through fabric selection and pattern creation, to final production, visual presentation, and promotion. The elements of the process are illustrated with 200-plus photographs, sketches, and computer-process screenshots, allowing readers to feel like they are attending a course. He intersperses fashion history with references to haute couture's finest designers and their contributions. Class is not complete without a visual field trip to designer Lutz Huelle's studio, documenting the behind-the-scenes reality of a small fashion house creating its spring-summer collection. Appendixes include more than 20 pages of additional informative resources.... Gerval's guide with focused professional and technical information is highly recommended for fledgling fashion designers, including design
students and entrepreneurs. (Jane Scott Library Journal 2010-11-15)
