This adventure tale begins in New Orleans and proceeds up the Mississippi River and across the Natchez Trace to Nashville and Andrew Jackson's plantation, The Hermitage, and his famous race track at Clover Bottom. The hero, Patrick Ferrat, a robust, venturesome fur trader of French-Irish lineage, is robbed of ten thousand dollars by two renegade outlaws who intend to use this stake to ruin Andrew Jackson in a rigged horse race. They acquire a famous French race horse from Haiti and jog him to Nashville hitched to a gypsy wagon. Meanwhile Ferrat is in hot pursuit, accompanied by his fiancee, a young Creole beauty, her vivacious aunt and two slave servants. Arriving in Nashville just one day before the 'race of the century,' the hero discovers that Andrew Jackson is aware of the renegade's scheme, and has developed a plan to beat them at their own game. The results of this 'big money' race and the hero's confrontation with the outlaws brings an exciting finish to a story rich with early American History.
