From Booklist:
Ages 6-8. In this collection of 20 previously uncollected poems, Eastwick, who died in 1985, writes in the voice of a reflective child on such familiar topics as sunflowers and autumn leaves, rain and small, furry animals. The verses' easy rhythms, unforced rhymes, and generally sunny tone make it almost impossible to resist reading the poems aloud: "Nobody knows / where the Wind goes--/ it comes with a flutter / it goes with a gust, / it comes when it will / and it goes where it must / but--/ where it goes, / nobody knows." In bright watercolors, Maass brings together clothed animals and a multicultural cast of children (plus one red-capped garden gnome), who regard the natural world with smiles and wide eyes. Enriched with occasional hints of the ineffable--"Softer than a moth's wing, / lighter than a sigh, / who was it / and / what was it / that just went by?"--this collection is an inviting introduction to a poet who deserves rediscovery. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-A posthumous collection of 20 light verses compiled by a former editor of Highlights for Children, in which many of Eastwick's works appeared. The poems are pleasantly undistinguished ("It's a habit/of Rabbit/to leap in the sun,/to dance in/deep clover,/to jump and have fun-"). The selections are accompanied by Maass's amusing ink-and-watercolor illustrations. The poems are arranged by topic-"Nonsense and Humor"; "Nature's World"; "Seasons and Weather"; "Wishes, Dreams, and Fancy." Wonderful, outstanding collections by the likes of Lee Bennett Hopkins, J. Patrick Lewis, or Valerie Worth already exist on these topics. Many folks may want to skip this title.
