Synopsis

A boy hears the ringing of a hammer in the evening air. He follows the sound to the blacksmith shop where the fiery forge makes it a warm place on a winter's night. The boy watches as his father pounds steel on an anvil. Tonight he is making shoes for Shadow Horse. When the big horse arrives, led by his owner, he stomps and whinnies. Then, after a few pats on his broad back and a sugar-cube treat, Shadow Horse settles down. The father lifts the left hoof and the shoeing begins. The night will be a special one for the boy, when his father helps him shoe his first horse. Linda Oatman High's beautiful story depicts the loving bond between parent and child, while Ted Lewin's luminescent illustrations capture the heat and flickering shadows of a blacksmith shop one cold night in winter.

About the Author:

Linda Oatman High is the author of the picture books Barn Savers (illustrated by Ted Lewis), Beekeepers (illustrated by Doug Chayka), and The Christmas Star (illustrated by Ronald Himler). Her novels include Maizie; Hound Heaven; The Summer of the Great Divide; and A Stone's Throw from Paradise. She lives in Narvon, Pennsylvania.

Ted Lewin has illustrated more than one hundred books for children, including Peppe the Lamplighter by Elisa Bartone, for which he was awarded the Caldecott Honor; and The Always Prayer Shawl by Sheldon Oberman, which received the National Jewish Book Award. Mr. Lewin lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife Betsy.

Ages 4-8. In this simply told, intimately atmospheric father-son tale, a young narrator looks on one winter's evening as his blacksmith father reshoes three of a plow horse's hooves, then, for the first time, hears "it's your turn." Lit by the forge's orange light, every tool and piece of scrap in the modern smithy is painted in precise detail, as are the two sturdy workers, intent on their task, and the white horse looming hugely over all. Although children will get at least a general sense of how horseshoeing is done, this is mostly about shared love and respect as one generation teaches another. That makes it a worthy companion or alternative to such titles as Mary Lyn Ray's Basket Moon (1999), illustrated by Barbara Cooney, and Sherry Garland's My Father's Boat (1998), illustrated by Ted Rand.
