Grace Upon Grace is not the ordinary, dry, sequential timetable of a church’s history. Instead, it chronicles the spirit, caring, and love that transformed tiny Henry Church—with its four parishioners—into the First Presbyterian Church, Martinsville, Virginia, which has had more than 4,000 members over its 150 years.

But this church history is more than names and buildings: it’s the story of the people—faithful, sincere, and true—who filled the church with life and these pages with their individual stories.

Written in an engaging narrative style, Grace Upon Grace tells true tales rich in Southern tradition, fried chicken church dinners, and undeniable spirit. The result is this amazing tapestry woven of love, dedication, determination, commitment, and grace.

About the Author:
Jim Stegall is a former reporter and columnist for the Toledo Blade. While in Ohio, this transplanted Southerner’s down-home style of writing was featured in the newspaper’s Sunday magazine in such pieces as "Saturday Night in Hicksville" and "Grandpa Wouldn’t Let Me Put That Fiddle Down." After returning to his native Martinsville, Stegall ran a small business. Now semi-retired and continuing to write, he and his wife Myra are members of First Presbyterian Church, Martinsville. They have three sons and three granddaughters.
