Although jet combat was born during the Korean War, those legendary aerial encounters between F-86 Sabres and Soviet-built MiG-15s merely set the stage for what was to come a decade later in the skies over Southeast Asia. No other engagement between U.S. and enemy fighters ever approached the magnitude of the Vietnam War, with jets capable of speeds approaching Mach 2 and infrared or radar-guided missiles replacing traditional machine guns for shooting down enemy aircraft.
