About the Author:
Dr. Marcia Heiman is Chief Executive Officer of Learning to Learn, Inc., a consulting and publishing firm in Somerville, MA. The firm provides Learning to Learn seminars and materials for educators and companies. She is also the Head of Research and Development at Boston College s Learning to Learn Department. Dr. Heiman is the co-developer of the National Education Association's Building Thinking Skills series and co-editor of the NEA's Thinking Skills Instruction: Concepts and Techniques, co-author of Learning to Learn: Critical Thinking Skills for the Quality Workforce; and co-developer of Learning to Learn, an interactive video course which IBM made available to its entire workforce worldwide. Dr. Heiman has been researching and developing aspects of Learning to Learn since receiving her doctorate. She served as director of college learning centers at a number of colleges and universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of New Hampshire, Roxbury Community College, and Boston College. She has tested the impact of LTL on educationally disadvantaged students at these colleges and universities and at public schools across the country, including Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Benton Harbor, MI. LTL's controlled studies showing measurable changes in learning have been externally validated by the U.S. Department of Education s Joint Dissemination Review Board. Dr. Heiman holds a Bachelor of Arts from New York University, a Masters in Research in Instruction from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Doctorate in Behavioral Sciences from the University of Michigan.
Joshua Slomianko has a wide-ranging background, which includes being part of a research team in immunology at the Medical School of Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem; directing the blood bank at Misgabladach Hospital; working with television news visuals for the Israeli Broadcasting Authorities; and doing graduate work in philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Mr. Slomianko holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and has done graduate work in philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He also received training in the biological sciences at the Hadassah Medical School of Jerusalem. Dr. Heiman and Mr. Slomianko are also the developers of the National Education Association s Building Thinking Skills series; the editors of Thinking Skills Instruction: Concepts and Techniques, the authors of Learning to Learn® Critical Thinking Skills for the Quality Workforce; and the developers of Learning to Learn®, an interactive video course which IBM has made available to its entire workforce worldwide
