Joyce Slayton-Mitchell is the author of more than thirty books for children and adults. A Vermonter who writes in the summers, she lives in New York City, where she is the director of college advising at an independent school.

Grade 3-6--Readers follow a complete process as workers and machines cut trees and take them to the sawmill where they are made into boards, wood chips, and pulp. The equipment used to cut and haul the trees is huge and many of the devices have interesting names such as knuckleboom loader and feller buncher. The full-color photographs of these machines are plentiful and clear. The author assumes some prior knowledge of logging, as the text, although minimal, is not always easy to understand, and not all unfamiliar words are defined in context: "After this logger fells the tree, he wraps a choker chain around the butt of the felled tree and hitches the chain to the skidder winch cable." However, readers can turn to a glossary for more detailed explanations of timber terms. Children who are fascinated with big machines, or who want to learn more about trees and other natural resources, will find much to savor here.
