Billie Jean Collins is Instructor in the Middle Eastern Studies at Emory University and Acquisitions Editor at the Society of Biblical Literature. She is the editor of A History of the Animal World in the Ancient Near East (Brill).

Review:

Collins (Emory Univ.) has written a welcome addition to a growing corpus of works on Hittite culture. In the first two of five chapters, she sums up in a very readable style the history of Hittite studies and the political history of the Hittites. She devotes the next two chapters to the topics of society and religion. Using a mixture of textual and archaeological evidence, Collins gives a good outline of what is known about these important areas of Hittite life. The last chapter is a discussion of the Hittites and the occurrence of a people of that name in the Bible; Collins's discussion about this important issue is very complete and up-to-date. In addition to giving her audience a very readable text, Collins provides extensive notes on almost every page, pointing interested readers to the text or article from which the information was derived.
