About the Author

Vanessa Sorensen is a graphic artist whose work is influenced by her training in zoology. Vanessa studied black bear behavior to obtain her master's degree. She then worked as an exhibit designer for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences where she was able to combine her interests in science an art. This inspired her to return to school to study art and design. She is the author of Zen Kitty and Zen Birds and is currently a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. Birds been a persistent and pervasive presence in Vanessa's life since her first ornithology class in college. Through years of living in the field and working at the museum, Vanessa learn the appearance, songs, behavior and habitat of many species of birds. She married an ornithologist, and the couple “nest” together in Ohio. His love of birds is contagious and a constant inspiration. Her affection for both (husband and birds) continues to grow through the years.

If you are interested in attracting birds to your yard, a water source is essential. Water features not only provide birds a much needed source for drinking water, but also a way to keep clean and cool. Consider the following options when installing a water source:

Bird Baths
Bird baths come in many shapes and sizes. Just be sure the water isn't too deep (no more than 3"). A shallow end can also be created by adding rocks. Also, be sure to refresh the water several times a week.

Drip Devices
A drip device is an excellent way to draw birds to a silent bird bath. Drip devices are available commercially or you can make your own by suspending a bucket with a very tiny hole across the bath.

Misters
To attract hummingbirds and warblers, consider installing a light misting water source.

Waterfall/Pond
If space allows, a waterfall or pond is a great way to draw not only songbirds, but larger wading birds.
