Fatherless, Randolph Upton spends his formative years near railroad tracks in Pennsylvania. There he passionately studies the art of mechanical engineering under the guidance of his friend and mentor, Gustav Hofleiter, a German immigrant. His training is interrupted by the Civil War, where he serves as a reluctant and untrained infantry officer. Thanks to an influential distant relative, a transfer to the United States Military Railroad is arranged. As Escort Commander of troops charged with protecting the railroad, he comes to the attention of President Lincoln. While riding with Randolph across a hastily-built wooden trestle, Lincoln, filled with admiration for the ingenuity of the construction, exclaims, "There is nothing in it but beanpoles and cornstalks!"
