Each book's four- to- six chapters are made up of facing-page spreads with a full page of background and detail-rich text on one side and illustrations on the other. Topics include the civilization's origins, rulers, religious beliefs and ceremonies, class system, and military, artistic and cultural achievements. Brief "Did You Know?" insets offer interesting facts about the topics. Bodden objectively analyzes each civilization's positive and negative characteristics, from enduring cultural contributions to human sacrifices and slavery.
