Synopsis

Through vivid and rhythmic poetry, My Heart of Rice moves to empower anyone who may have a difficult or unconventional relationship with their cultural identity. While Lanuza encourages acceptance of our unique details, she emphasizes the unity found in shared experiences and speaks of the inherent need for belonging, the youthful attempts at assimilation, and the deep melting pot of ethnicity and culture that makes up our humanity.

About the Author

Before Ashley Lanuza attended UCLA for Psychology and Film Media studies, she began exploring her sense of self. Born in America to an immigrant Filipino family, Ashley has made it her mission to explore identity and how it influences our memories and the paths we choose to take in life. Ms. Lanuza contends that it all begins in childhood "with its roller coaster of changes" and progresses throughout adulthood -- an ever-changing "work in progress." Her book of poetry, My Heart of Rice, is a collection of her experiences in self-identity and understanding.

From the Back Cover

Weaving together her personal journey and the histories of Filipino farm workers, activists, and caregivers, Ashley Lanuza illuminates generational relations and the challenges of defining one's identity. Her poems, crafted like the sinigang and pancit lovingly prepared by her grandfather, make visible the ways in which racial currents permeate daily life, as well as the sources of strength and meaning.
-Valerie Matsumoto, Ph.D, author of City Girls: The Nisei Social World in Los Angeles

Ashley fearlessly allows us into her world of self identity the best way Filipinos know how-- through our stomachs. As a fellow Filipina, I too felt her vulnerability, her empowerment, and so much more. Busog na busog ang puso ko.
- Marielle Sallo, Ed.D

My Heart of Rice is a refreshing breath of nostalgia that takes you back to rediscover your childhood memories and contextualize it as part of a shared Filipino American experience.
