Grade 7-10-Bazza's life has not been easy. After leaving home, the young man lived on the streets until he was chased into the beach scrub. As the story opens, he spies a small shack and hopes it will provide him with food and a place in which to hide. However, Bazza soon discovers that it isn't empty. Earl, its owner, curiously eyes this raggedy waif. He needs a decky and Bazza might take up the challenge. He accepts Earl's offer to teach him the crayfish business and together they start the laborious daily tasks of craying. Bunney brings in-depth knowledge of the sea to this adventure story, which is filled to the brim with action and details of the intricate dangers of working on a small fishing boat. The development of Bazza's character as he begins to accept responsibility for his life is well intentioned. However, the intensity of each situation and the peculiarities of Australian words may put off adolescent readers.
