K-Gr 3--In rhymed verse, a little girl tells her mother that she's going to California to become a movie star. As the daughter elaborates on her fanciful plans, her mother counters with actual attractions. For example, when the child says, "I'll leap tall buildings or swing from a vine," her mother responds, "We'll walk through redwoods and sing in the sunshine." Although the concept is a good one, the verse is often forced: "They'll put a star in the sidewalk. It will say my name." "California is great fun. You'll love it just the same!" It's also disjointed: "I'll be a vampire and make people shiver." "Some say they've seen Big Foot. Others found gold in the river." Roeder's mixed-media illustrations do a good job of integrating the girl's imaginative statements with her mother's realistic comments. The child dances across the pages past trolley cars, giant sequoias, Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and other famous scenes. A concluding "Cruising California" section briefly describes the state's major sites and tourist attractions. Unfortunately, neither addresses nor phone numbers for more information are given, and although the verse appears in Spanish and English, the latter section is in English only. Overall, the book is more useful as a California tour guide than as a bilingual picture book, and few out-of-state libraries will wish to purchase it.
