Synopsis

The author begins his account with his childhood, but concentrates on the years between 1939 and 1949 – the years of his experience with the Holocaust. Edmund Goldenburg began his writing in 1985 with the intent of sharing it only with his family, in order for them to learn and perhaps understand. With encouragement the story grew and became a more public testimonial of those terrible years.

I managed to find a Jewish clinic and got a 'job" as a medical assistant, intern, getting no pay and rarely some food. There were also not too many patients. People were afraid to be seen in a Jewish clinic. I earned occasional money, and food, by helping people move to a designated ghetto, which at that time was not closed. I saw some of my friends, usually for a few minutes; we exchanged whatever news and rumors we had-we were all so scared, hoping to be able to get home somehow.
