Henry Rehder, Jr., a noted Wilmington horticulturist locally known as Dr. Plant, is an authority on coastal gardening. His family has owned and operated Will Rehder Florist, Inc. for more than 127 years. Henry Rehder, Jr. himself is the former host of a question-and-answer radio gardening program and is the garden writer for the Wilmington Star-News and Scene Magazine. His first book, Growing a Beautiful Landscape, (Banks Channel Books) is a regional bestseller.
Because gardening in the Eastern Carolinas is distinctive, Mr. Rehder has written a daily guide for gardeners in the coastal plain. The guide, which takes the difficulty out of successful gardening, will be an important resource for coastal residents. Those who are new to the area will quickly learn how to adapt their gardening skills to meet the challenges of the region. Natives of the Carolinas will benefit from the authors vast knowledge and experience with local flora.
Creating a Beautiful Landscape clarifies why our climate poses unique lawn and garden challenges. Divided into seasonal sections, monthly and daily activities, this book explains everything the reader will need to know in order to have a flourishing garden: when and how to prepare the soil for planting; which plants are best for our environment; when to plant perennials, vegetables, shrubs and trees, and how to prepare them for adverse weather. Also included is a clear, yet simple How To section, which covers a gamut of activities to help readers make the most of their gardens.
Designed to be useful to both novice and experienced gardeners, this book helps readers create their own beautiful landscapes. Mr. Rehders passion for the subject shines on every page, making this book an enjoyable and informative read. Creating a Beautiful Landscape will become an essential part of every coastal gardeners reference library.
