To complete the research for The Remarkable Rainforest, my husband and I spent several weeks in the rainforests of Costa Rica. As we left, flying over the high mountains, across the lowland rainforests, and out over the Caribbean, I wrote the final entry in my "Rainforest Journal," which is included in the book: "As I looked down at the dense green forests that crowded the beach to seek the open sun, I was remembering what it was like to be inside the forest. Warm green shadows and sparkles of sunlight, the sweet autumn smell of decay mixed with the fragrance of tropical flowers, a little brown bat flying out of the leaf litter on the ground, and the puppy-like paca, Panchito."I felt a sudden deep regret, knowing that every moment acres upon acres of rainforest are being destroyed. Surely we won't allow the loss of the richest and most complex ecosystem on our planet. I wouldn't like a world without monkeys that howl and little red frogs that wear blue jeans, would you? "I leaned back in my seat on the airplane and thought about all I had learned in a very short time. Maybe that's the way it will work. We will learn from each other and teach each other and change the way our world thinks and save a priceless remnant of rainforest.
