From dust jacket: "One of the most important artists in the 20th century, Louise Bourgeois was born in Paris in 1911. She has lived and worked in New York since she emigrated in 1938. Her extensive and challenging oeuvre, primarily sculpture, also includes hundreds of drawings and some paintings. This book, produced in close cooperation with the artist, incorporates portions of conversations with Christiane Meyer-Thoss and numerous statements made by Louise Bourgeois about her work. In her essay, Designing for Free Fall, Christiane Meyer-Thoss says: 'Even her most abstract works show a high degree of self-portraiture or more specifically portraits of her relationships to others. Her sculptures stand firmly on the ground, leaning slightly, surreptitiously corresponding with the viewer, a combination of distance and closeness to the point of physical contact. They describe Louise Bourgeois's paths, her position in the world: she establishes and maintains an equilibrium in a state of ceaseless ambivalence. Her unaffected treatment of the erotic does not shy away from sexual overtones: it is one of the most challenging aspects of her work.'"
