Synopsis

English summary: This second volume of the catalog of medieval churches in Rome is dedicated to the first Christian basilica, the papal cathedral St. Giovanni in Laterano, which was founded by Constantine. For the first time, written and pictorial sources allow for the formation of a description of the medieval exterior and interior of the structure, which was fully transformed during the baroque period and again in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Reconstructions of the fallen facade, of the 13th Century apse, and of the ciborium from the Magdalene altar, as well as studies of the medieval tombs and the magnificent cloister enrich the work.

In the context of church reform and in competition with the Basilica of St. Peter, the Lateran clergy developed an ideological self-image based on legends from the 11th Century onwards. This becomes evident both in construction and interior design, and is also manifested in the significant innovations of the 13th and 14the Centuries. German text.

German description:
Jahrhunderts manifestiert.
