Attrition rates for students enrolled in online courses are traditionally higher than face to face courses. One factor that impacts attrition is student psychological sense of community (PSOC). Using research that examined the PSOC in residential neighborhoods, Dr. Laughner surveyed thousands of students nationwide enrolled in distance education courses. The results reveal that not only is there a profound difference in students' PSOC between online and face-to-face courses, but those differences are impacted by gender, age, and ethnicity.

Tom Laughner is Director of Educational Technology at Smith College. His research involves effective learning spaces and online learning communities. He received his B.S. in Psychology (University of Arizona), M.S. in Education & Human Development (George Washington University), and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Andrews University).
