The Secret of the Shadow explores these "holes in the light" through perceptual psychology, historical accounts of their use in architectural teaching, and an overview of their role in classical modern architecture. Additionally, 50 "shadow seekers" from around the world, including Pritzker Prize-winning architects Tadao Ando and Sverre Fehn, contributed a work of their own that reveals the importance of shadows in contemporary architectural concepts.

About the Author:
HElEne Binet was born in 1959 and is of both Swiss and French descent. She turned to architectural photographing 1986, and since then has worked with Zaha Hadid, John Hejduk, Daniel Liebeskind, St. John and Caruso, Ben van Berkel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Peter Zumthor, and others.

Es gibt immer mehr Lichtquellen auf der Erde, damit immer mehr Licht und immer weniger Schattenzonen und Dunkelheit. In der Architektur wächst die Transparenz der neuen Gebäude und ihrer Organisation. Der vermehrte Einsatz von Glas und anderen transluzenten Schichten wirft in der Folge von mehr Licht auch die Frage nach der Bedeutung des Schattens auf. Sind Schatten ein Gewinn - ein Schutz oder der Verlust von Helligkeit. Wie erklären sich architektonische Schatten in einer historischen Perspektive? Wie ist ihre Bedeutung in der Architektur bestimmt worden? Warum brauchen wir Schatten? Dieser Frage versucht das Buch, das eine Ausstellung im Deutschen Architektur Museum zum Thema begleitete, von unterschiedlichen Standpunkten und Vorstellungen aus nachzugehen. Autoren: Raoul Bunschoten studierte an der ETH in Zürich, an der Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in New York und an der Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. 1993 gründete er CHORA, architecture and urbanism. Mit seinem Büro arbeitete er auf dem Gebiet des Urbanismus und der Stadtentwicklung. Er unterrichtete als Gastprofessor an verschiedenen Universitäten wie z.B. École de Beaux Arts in Lyon, an der Columbia University, an der Århus School of Architecture und an der ETH in Zürich. Sein wissenschaftlicher Schwerpunkt liegt in der Urbanismusforschung. Das iCP, Institute für Cultural Policy, wurde 2004 in Hamburg mit der Intention gegründet, Plattform für neue Formen der Architektur zu sein und Beiträge zur Fachdebatte mit Ausstellungen, Vorträgen und Publikationen zu leisten. Ulrike Brandi (b. 1957), Dipl. Des. IALD DWB, is a lighting designer and the managing director of ULRIKE BRANDI LICHT GmbH in Hamburg. She designs lighting solutions for commercial buildings, natural settings, and cities.
