About the Author:

Herbert List, born in
Hamburg in 1903, left
his father s coffee company
and Nazi Germany
in 1936 to become a
photographer. A lover of
the Mediterranean world,
he died in Munich in
1975. Max Scheler
(1928 2003), photog -
rapher, picture editor,
and former assistant
of Herbert List,
admini stered the
Herbert List Estate.
Matthias Harder is a
curator for the Helmut
Newton Foundation in Berlin.
