Hamburg-based artist Peter Piller is known for his original use of the media of photography and drawing. This work is based on specially devised ways of documenting, archiving and mapping. He often uses found material such as photos from regional newspapers, historical postcards, militaria finds from the GDR, pictures of damage claims sent to an insurance company or - in what is certainly his most popular collection - aerial photos of family homes. In 2002, he put his hand to a bundle of 12,000 photos from an aerial photo archive. They were produced by a company in the 70s/80s to be sold at the front door to the owners of the residential properties depicted. He sorted the less favourable aerial views according to his own criteria and compiled them in 2004 in a magnificent illustrated book: VON ERDE SCHÖNER. The book was an extraordinary success, has been out of print for a long time and traded at an incredibly high price. With Peter Piller we pursued the idea of a reprint: at the artist's request in an inexpensive brochure. Thanks to advanced technology, this reprint is far superior to the first edition in paper and print quality.
