Reviews

Gr 2-4-The mysteries of ancient Egypt have fascinated audiences for generations. Using large scale info-maps, Ruzicka jams thousands of years of history into very few pages. Rich in information and explanation, the book begins with a quick overview of the landscape and locations relevant to the ancient lands, discussing the class system, temples, tombs, and more. Using simple cartoon diagrams and illustrations, the pages take readers through the building of the pyramids, the highlights of major temples and tombs with scenes of what they would have looked like completed, and progressing through time to the present day. The lack of photos or more detailed sketches is unfortunate. The quick explanation of Egyptians gods may leave readers wanting more and the lack of information on hieroglyphics is an odd omission. However, on the map of the Valley of the Kings, some of Egypt's queens are highlighted and given recognition for their contributions. VERDICT Overall, this unique format, overwhelming amount of facts, labeled diagrams, and explanation of some traditions will give any budding Egyptologist something to savor.-Erin Olsenα(c) Copyright 2011.
