Synopsis

The monograph explores one of the lesser known areas of the vast and multi-faceted productions of Bernini, that of painting, in the most general context of homogenization of language arts, through paintings executed directly by Bernini and the inclusion of paintings under his leadership. Only systematic investigations, the link with sculpture and graphic production, together with a comparative analysis of what was produced in Rome in the seventeenth century in the field of painting, with in-depth details about the artists "Bernini", could encourage that extra leap of connoisseurship that led to the rediscovery of the author "figure paintings". On the other hand one can not speak of painted portraits Bernini without fully knowing the Roman portraiture of the seventeenth century, a topic which Petrucci has spent nearly two decades in a systematic way of study, so as to be considered the ultimate expert on the subject at the international level . There are works in the catalog notes, less known and documented some important unpublished, from the heirs Bernini, from the Barberini collection or from the Medici collections.
