RodrĄguez de Ibarra, a psychologist who is the mother of three children, notes that there are three kinds of intelligence that must be in balance for a child to grow up to be a well-rounded adult. These are intellectual (understanding, reasoning), emotional (impulse control, problem solving), and moral (conscience, decision making). The author discusses each of these and explains the different factors that affect their development: environment, genetics, and family relationships. She stresses the import role parents play as mentors of appropriate behavior and encourages them to provide age-appropriate activities and interactions. Her method is based on teaching children to be responsible. Very young children can learn to obey, and as they grow older they can begin to consider the consequences of their actions for themselves and for others. The goal is the development of responsibility, which allows the child to engage in service, solidarity, and cooperation both in the family and in society. By providing lists of age-appropriate expectations for conduct and suggestions for how parents can elicit these behaviors, RodrĄguez de Ibarra has produced an extremely useful book for parents of infants and older children.
