Synopsis
A detailed and whimsical depiction of the Mexican Folk Art tradition of Alebrijes. Alebrijes are brightly colored, fantastical creatures that originate from Mexican folk art. They are often a fusion of multiple animals—real or imaginary—such as a lion with eagle wings or a lizard with dragon horns. Each Alebrije is covered in vibrant patterns like swirls, flames, flowers, and geometric shapes, making them visually striking and highly imaginative.
They were introduced in the 1930 by artist Pedro Linares, since then, artisans in places like Oaxaca have continued the tradition, often carving them from copal wood and painting them in vivid detail.
Although they are not tied to ancient myth, they have become beloved symbols of Mexican creativity and craftsmanship.
