The re-making of China

China did not simply change in the early twentieth century; it was re-made. A nation remade, at speed. In The re-making of China, Adolf S. Waley presents a brisk, illuminating set of political history essays that track chinese modernization and reform from late Qing reform through the upheavals of revolution and nation building and into republican era China. With a clear eye for institutions as well as ideas, Waley connects policy, power, and public mood to show how chinese government and society were reshaped under pressure from within and without. The result is a focused, readable guide to early 20th century China: not a sweeping chronicle, but a sharply argued view of turning points and the choices that defined them. Long valued as a china studies reference, this public domain classic remains an essential window onto east asian political history, capturing the texture of debate and reform as it was understood close to the events themselves. It rewards the curious general reader looking for context behind modern China, while offering asian history students a dependable companion for study and discussion. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. This unabridged classic edition is ideal for readers who want a historically grounded perspective, and for classic-literature collectors who value authoritative works that still speak to the present.
