About this Item
In 24 (cm 7,5 x 13), pp. (24) + 360 con 1 tavola all'antiporta incisa all'acquaforte. Legatura settecentesca in piena pelle con nervi al dorso. "By turns credulous and sceptical, Sir Thomas Browne is one of the most unusual of the great writersÂof the seventeenth century. He spent his working life as a doctor practising at Norwic, and not least remarkable is his aloofness from all theÂpolitical disturbances through which he lived. A Platonist by temperament, the world to him was only an image, a shadow of theÂreal, and all existence is merely the substance of reflexions. Nothing is too minute to be considered: the smallest trifle may provide the key to the problems ofÂexistence and what lies beyond death. Browne's inimitable style mirrors the peculiarity of his thought: in an age given to erudition, metaphor and elaborate diction, his writing has an individual excess of all three of which the reader never tires. The 'Religio' is not, as its many imitators were to be, a defense of its author's calling, nor is expression of heterodox opinion: Browne's opinion were free from heresy and his book's title will be better translated as 'philosophy ' or ' faith ' than as religion. (Cfr.ÂPrinting and the Mind of Man. A Descriptive Catalogue Illustrating the Impact of Print on the Evolution of Western Civilization, p. 55). ITA. Seller Inventory # 30 n.1317
